Who is a visiting professor?

A visiting professor is a non-salaried assistant/associate/full professor who visits Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) to teach, lecture or conduct research in the fields that SUMS values.

Why visiting professors are assigned?

Vising Professor Program has been introduced at SUMS to create a space for internationalization of education and research. The presence of national and international world-class professors and researchers as visiting professors at SUMS would make a great contribution to the university, academics and the students. To encourage this program, the university leaves it to the visiting professors to decide the number and the duration of their visits to SUMS. In addition, visiting professors are welcome to collaborate virtually with SUMS.

Expected activities

SUMS visiting professors are expected to carry out the following activities:

  • Giving Lectures and holding training workshops at SUMS
  • Supervising or advising research projects of Masters or PhD students
  • Taking advisory roles to promote the quality assurance at the university
  • Attending SUMS conferences and congresses
  • Creating virtual academic contents to be used by students and academics
  • Identifying counterpart colleagues at SUMS for further collaborations
  • Writing a complete report of each visit and delivering it to the Head of the Department/School
  • Bridging the gap between their home institution and SUMS

Terms and conditions

The Office of the Vice-chancellor for Global Strategies and International Affairs (GSIA) has considered the following benefits:

  • Subsistence fees will be covered
  • Airport transfer fees will be covered
  • University owned accommodation will be provided during the visits
  • The cost of a return flight ticket will be reimbursed depending on the decision of the GSIA office and the availability of the budget
  • An expenditure will be paid depending on the decision of the GSIA office and the availability of the budget

How to be assigned

The assignment of the visiting professors will depend on whether they have had previous academic collaboration with SUMS or not.

If the academic connection has been previously set with one of the SUMS faculty members, the relevant SUMS Head of the Department/Research Center will be responsible to send a formal request to the GSIA office for consideration. After consultations with the relevant Department/Research Center, the GSIA office will make a decision and inform both the Department/Research Center and the professor.

If the intended professor has never had any academic collaborations or contact person at SUMS, he/she can fill out the online visiting professor program application form to send their request to the GSIA office. In this case, the GSIA office will consult with the relevant Department/Research Center, will make the decision and will inform both the Department/Research Center and the professor about the decision made.

The tenure of the visiting professor will be issued for a period of three years.
