Biography

Prof. Ahmad Ali Amirghofran completed his specialty training in general surgery at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences and pursued further subspecialty training in cardiac surgery in England. He subsequently assumed the role of Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department in Shiraz, where his clinical practice has focused primarily on adult cardiac surgeries and complex congenital heart procedures.

He established Iran's largest minimally invasive cardiac surgery center in Shiraz, specializing in operations performed without opening the chest. Dr. Amirghofran has also made notable contributions to academia, delivering more than 250 lectures and publishing over 100 scientific articles.

Distinguished as the sole Iranian cardiac surgeon to have developed at least 12 novel cardiac surgical techniques—each registered with CTSnet (the global cardiothoracic surgery network)—Dr. Amirghofran has brought significant recognition to Shiraz and Iran. Among his innovations is the RAA valve technique, which utilizes the patient's right atrial appendage to reconstruct the pulmonary valve during surgery for patients with Tetralogy of Fallot; this method is now internationally acknowledged and adopted. His recent advancement involves the complete reconstruction of the tricuspid valve using autologous tissue, a procedure that earned him the First Innovation Prize from CTSnet in 2023.

Moreover, Dr. Amirghofran designed the Shiraz frame for valve construction in 2024, winning the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery's innovation award. In 2025, he was recognized by CTSnet as the Featured Profile in Cardiac Surgery.

Through his expertise in complex, minimally invasive heart valve repairs, Dr. Amirghofran has contributed to saving the lives of numerous patients who travel to Shiraz from across Iran and neighboring countries.
